I did a lengthy exam of this in "The Cybernetics of Performace" (LEONARDO,
11/'00).
What I consider performance only happens through a continuous ongoing
feedback between participants in real time. This can be as simple of chat,
but the 'social bandwidth' narrows significantly. Also there has to be an
ongoing cognitive loop in the mix.
Can we say that aan interactive generative kinetic sculpture is a
performance? Only in the narrowest sense, as its cognitive abilities are
very limited, and few works nowadays are aware of things like context and
nuance.
Everything else is pretty much performative, as there are elements of
performance, such as the inscription of codes and interaction, but the
problem is that there is a temporal or spatial disconnect that disallows the
expansion of the event into performance.
